Thank you Congressman Chaka Fattah for visiting the University of Pittsburgh last Friday. The visit included a meeting with Jan Scheuermann to learn more about the Pitt/UPMC developed brain-computer interface (BCI) technology that allowed her to intentionally move an arm, turn and bend a wrist, and close a hand for the first time in nine years. A team of researchers including Dr. Andrew Schwartz, Dr. Michael Boninger and Dr. Jennifer Collinger successfully demonstrated for the first time that a person with longstanding quadriplegia can maneuver a mind-controlled, human-like robot arm in seven dimensions (7D) to consistently perform many of the natural and complex motions of everyday life. Congressman Fattah, a strong supporter of neuroscience research, had the opportunity to learn more about the University’s recently launched Brain Institute under the direction of Dr. Peter Strick. Special thank you to Ms. Scheuermann for joining us last week as well.
