Thank you Congressman Chaka Fattah for visiting the University of Pittsburgh last Friday. The visit included a meeting with Jan Scheuermann to learn more about the Pitt/UPMC developed brain-computer interface (BCI) technology that allowed her to intentionally move an arm, turn and bend a wrist, and close a hand for the first time in nine years. A team of researchers including Dr. Andrew Schwartz, Dr. Michael Boninger and Dr. Jennifer Collinger successfully demonstrated for the first time that a person with longstanding quadriplegia can maneuver a mind-controlled, human-like robot arm in seven dimensions (7D) to consistently perform many of the natural and complex motions of everyday life. Congressman Fattah, a strong supporter of neuroscience research, had the opportunity to learn more about the University’s recently launched Brain Institute under the direction of Dr. Peter Strick.
