Thank you Creswell!!!! ---------------------- Thank you Mayor Stram, Councilors and City Staff for giving me this plaque in honor of my service on the City Council. But the biggest thank you has to go to the People of Creswell. You have always stood by me and it was an honor of a lifetime to serve the town I grew up in – and I promise that I will continue to serve you. Senator Robert Kennedy once said: “This world demands the qualities of youth; not a time of life but a state of mind, a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the life of ease.” I have always taken the path least travelled – it must be fueled by an appetite for adventure. I remember my law school classmates, as they were taking jobs on Wall Street, in Washington D.C. and Silicon Valley saying: “Jacob, why in the heck are you moving back to Crestwell?” You see, I was never able to get my friends on the east coast to say Creswell properly. Nonetheless, I came home because I believe in this town, I believe in our community and the value and obligation of public service, just like those of you in the crowd, just like the City staff and just like the Mayor and Councilors before you. Real quickly, I want to talk about our accomplishments: We helped heal a town that was torn apart by politics; We brought skydiving back to Hobby Field; We added a third deputy, acting under the premise that a “safe community is a prosperous community”; We selected a new City Administrator; We voted to freeze water and sewer rates; We worked with the Food Pantry to get them situated in the Cobalt Tools building so they could better provide services to some of the most vulnerable in our community. But you know what makes me proud? The small things. In politics they are called constituent services… I am proud to be a Councilor who answered my emails, met with anybody who asked, helped folks on Meadow Lane deal with an unruly and loud neighbor, would report severe code violations at the request of constituents, would sometimes go out during an icy storm to try to fix a broken water pipe, while Cliff, who actually knows how to fix it, was on his way. We fixed wrongs of the past. For example, properly adjusting the Norcia family’s Through The Fence access fee… My biggest regret… my biggest regret… was volunteering to shovel driveways during a snow storm. You see, I have poor circulation in my hands so they get cold very quickly. But in all seriousness, what makes me most proud is that many of you still come to me, as a non-Councilor, asking for my constituent services. And I promise I will always be there to help. Thank you and God Bless.
