Wars have been fought Young men and women In the prime of their life Packing up their gear Taking with them a little memento Of something Or someone They hold dear They leave all that they know And love And go to fight a battle A battle that they know They must win Their nights are lonely And as they take rest upon the cold ground Their mind drifts to home And family They know not the struggles they will have The concept of death infiltrates their mind And the sense of never seeing their loves ones again Ripples through their mind At home there awaits Parents and siblings Mates and lovers Friends and distant family members They await the return Of that one that left To fight a battle To keep their land safe And the people that dwell there They go for you And for me They long to hold their loved one To feel the warmth of their bodies And the sound of their voice Let us not forget these young men and women Who set aside their plans and their families So that we can live in peace Father, God, keep them safe Protect them and return them home again Where the sounds and sights of war Will be no more.
