Thank you John Diaz or Chuck Nevius or whoever, but you missed the - TopicsExpress

Thank you John Diaz or Chuck Nevius or whoever, but you missed the whole point. The vote for Board President was not about Katy Tang who I agree does have more than enough competence to be Board President. I was not protesting Katy Tang. I actually acknowledged my colleagues who would get nominated. I said its special to get nominated and wanted them to know that I did not want to take that away from them. I did not want any of my colleagues to think that they did not deserve to be nominated for nor be Board President. I even congratulated Katy Tang for winning the vote. My problem with the Board President election was THE PROCESS. After a hard fought AND NOBLE campaign effort, my colleague David Campos was in need of a few mental health days. Everyone needs them from time to time. I have also missed meetings due to family and personal emergencies. Life happens. Despite what my colleagues who were pushing for a vote said, the sky was not going to fall if we did not have a seamless transition for Interim Board President. A good process for the vote is more important than a seamless transition for the Clerks Office. Democracy is more important and at the top of the list of conditions for a good process for a Board President vote is the inclusion and participation in the vote of all Board members who will be serving under the future Board President. I had called and left a message for David Chiu prior to him scheduling the Board President vote. I said the vote should NOT take part before Dec 9th because David Campos and Malia Cohen would not be around for the votes on November 18th and 25th. I told Scott Wiener the same. He disagreed with me. David Chiu called me back left a message but did not say what he was going to do. Many of us knew that Campos would not be here on the 25th and Chiu scheduled the vote knowing Campos would be out. After a protected and combative (and at times nasty) campaign that divided the electorate, the city needs to heal. David Chiu had the opportunity to help with the healing process by showing a little grace to his former opponent and the community who backed him. Instead Chiu excluded Campos and his community. I tried hard to dissuade David Chiu and my colleagues from voting on Tuesday. Of course half the board had already been set in motion on supporting Katy Tang so the only person who could really call off the vote was David Chiu. He had a moment to show what he is made of and chose not to take it. Perhaps graciousness is not part of his make up. I protested the vote itself but not the vote for Supervisor Tang. Eric Mar and I only walked out for the vote. We came back to close out the meeting when the Board Clerk reads the in memoria. After the meeting, I congratulated our future Interim Board President Katy Tang. sfchronicle/opinion/editorials/article/SF-Board-of-Supervisors-shouldn-t-walk-out-on-5904867.php?cmpid=twitter-desktop
