Thank you Melissa for bringing this to our attention. When The Compost Collective decided to organize. We all decided to do things properly and to do our due diligence, for us, for you and for all our loved ones. For our Community! We tested the soil and have taken all the necessary precautions and try our best to keep our compost site organic and pesticide free. If anyone wants to see our lab test results I can show them to you personally. The few times we used pesticides they were pesticides made from chrysanthemum flowers to deal with a wasp issue at one of our sites. I am a licensed exterminator and I used IPM principles. What is IPM? Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. IPM programs use current, comprehensive information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment. This information, in combination with available pest control methods, is used to manage pest damage by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment. The IPM approach can be applied to both agricultural and non-agricultural settings, such as the home, garden, and workplace. IPM takes advantage of all appropriate pest management options including, but not limited to, the judicious use of pesticides. In contrast, organic food production applies many of the same concepts as IPM but limits the use of pesticides to those that are produced from natural sources, as opposed to synthetic chemicals. So FYI Any veggies we have ever grown have been in organic soil and our own organic vermi compost so we are not directly affected by articles like this one from the NY Post. Now some of the science quoted by the NY Post makes no sense as they never give BLL (blood lead levels) and instead of giving solutions I feel they add to the problem. Here is the article nypost/2014/11/16/toxic-veggies-found-in-nycs-community-gardens/
