Thank you Mr. Raghavan for sharing your story with us. The year - TopicsExpress

Thank you Mr. Raghavan for sharing your story with us. The year 2005 started with a bang. One fine morning I realised some abnormality in my left testis. On seeing this I was totally shattered and was thinking of the worst. Immediately I rushed to an eminent Urologist. He advised me to take an Ultra Sonography and a Tumor Marker Test. The Report of the sonography showed oval homogenously hypoechoic lesion in the lower pole of the left testis which on doppler study showed hyervascularity. The tumor marker Beta hcg was out of range - H 1.0. My Urologist seeing the above reports advised me to undergo high inguinal orchidectomy. Surgery was done at Lilavati Hospital. The histopathology report showed Diffuse , BCell, High Grade Non Hodgkin"s Lymphoma - atleast stage 1( PT2 Nx Mx) Soft tissue tumor deposits in the peritesticular tissue present. As this case pertains to a Haematologist, I was referred to a Doctor in the same hospital. Bone marrow test and Full body Pet Scan were done. The Bone Marrow Biopsy showed no evidence of malignancy. The Pet Scan report showed "The FDG uptake in the left paraaortic region corresponds to the metasatic left PA nodes noted in the USG abdomen". The word Cancer itself sent shivers up my spine. Fortunately my family garnered strength and stood strongly to tackle this problem. Then the six cycles of chemo and lumbar punch started. I was put on protocol R-CEOP + IT MTX. The first chemo was administered in ICU to observe the reaction that I may have to the treatment. The chemo was done over two days - day one and day two. Fortunately my first chemo went through without any adverse effect. My Doctor was surprised and said "Captain - you are great and faced the treatment smoothly". All my six cycles of chemo went on without any adverse effect. The only trauma was lumbar punch which was painful. Otherwise I was leading a normal life and continued with my routine. Then I had to undergo Radiation . The total dose delivered to whole brain was 24 Gy and to bilateral testis was 36 Gy. I tolerated the treatment well. My case was also referred to US Doctors who concurred with the line of treatment prescribed by my Haematologist. V Care volunteers would meet me in Lilavati Hospital and offer emotional support, which was a great help during the traumatic period. I believe I could go through the entire procedure without much hassle because I resolved to fight it out. I was happy I was in the very safe hands of the Doctors and I appreciate the strength of my family. I would advise all the patients undergoing treatment to be positive and resolve to fight it out inspite of side effects. Strict diet pattern, hygiene and mental strength in getting over the trauma of this disease are very essential. Howe ever, initially I had the fear of relapse. During my annual check up sessions, I used to be very tense. Now that also has become a part of my life. Finally I thank Almighty for having given me the courage to face this. My sincere advice to every one of you is to go for immediate medical check-up, if something unusual is observed in the body. Cancer is curable if attacked on time. Request you to share your Cancer experience with us. It will help another person
