Thank you, Pamela, for sharing this with me. Anyone interested in Africas progress (or regress) should watch this. In random conversations with my friend, Fola, we had expressed cynicism about headlines applauding Africas growth. The Economist magazine had this beautiful cover of Africa Rising, and there was a period when the coolest thing to report about Africa was to mention the continent in the same breath with a-rising. In this Ted Talk, Ali Mufuruki paints a picture that questions the validity of that narrative. Of course, it questions whos making this judgement and how Africans react to this definition. Not in the context of identity but as a marker of progress which exploits Africans more than anything else, as well as Africans laxity in exploiting the continents capacity to grow.
