Thank you Premier David Alward and Minister Jody R. Carr in helping bring this strike to an end. This is what New Brunswick needs ...strong leadership. You can grab the rope or.... as Brian says.....lets pause..rewind or have moratorium. UNB, staff reach tentative agreement CHRIS MORRIS Legislature Bureau January 30, 2014 FREDERICTON – There is a tentative agreement in the strike that has suspended classes at the University of New Brunswick for almost three weeks. Miriam Jones, president of the Association of University of new Brunswick Teachers, which represents the roughly members of the academic staff, announced the deal on Thursday and said details will be released within the next 24 hours. “The AUNBT and UNB are pleased to announce an agreement to recommend suspension of the strike/lockout,” Jones said in a brief statement. “This comes as a result of reaching a tentative agreement on the key issues related to wages. The parties agree to jointly announce further details within the next 24 hours.” The two sides were ordered back to the bargaining table earlier this week by the provincial government. Brian Keller, a special outside mediator, was brought in to try and close the wide gap between the two parties on the issue of wages. Wednesday and Thursday were set aside for bargaining. Originally, the union was seeking salary increases of about 26 per cent over four years for its members, including professors and librarians. The union said a large increase was necessary for UNB to catch up to similar universities in a comparative group who all pay significantly higher wages. The university is offering 9.5 per cent over four years and has said that is the best offer it can make considering these tough economic times.
