Thank you Wimbledon Bookfest yesterday. I saw 500 children in a tent on Wimbledon Common - children from all over the borough, a very wide social mix. Then in the evening, in a smaller area, I presented Bookmarks the socialist bookshop s book William Morris, Poems of Protest . This smaller area is dedicated to William Morris who has a strong connection with Merton, as this was, I think, where he set up his first printing works…will do and check that now…And there is a building in the borough connected with him too… The Bookfest seems to be really well-organised and followed. I am a fan of literature and book festivals along with the books and spoken word events at music festivals. They revive old traditions of live entertainment and education. They represent real debates and argument. I think its vital that those of us who see ourselves as radical or left or socialist or green or all these things, find time and energy to present events at these.
