Thank you all who have supported the efforts of the Spoken Worlds Pavilion Team of making this years 10th Anniversary a successful endeavor. We are still in need of your financial support to cover production costs. Thank you to those who have already shown your love. Please send your donations for Spoken Worlds Pavilion to LABBX.org. Make sure to note that your donation is for SWP. Thank you in advance. The other day I promised some history and background. Here it is. If you would like more info on the Expo schedule of workshops, seminars and presentations, and the Childrens Corner, please go to LABBX.org A Little History In June 2004 the Los Angeles Black Book Expo began at the Exposition Park Inter-generational Community Center (3980 S. Menlo Avenue) in Los Angeles, California, and has thus become an essential public forum to share information and resources concerning the independent African and African American press and electronic medium in the U.S. and around the world. LABBX will keep this focus via the sponsoring or co-sponsoring of related events throughout the year, and remaining a free community-based enterprise that provides opportunity to a diverse population. Charles Chatmon - Executive Director Los Angeles Black Book Expo ~ Charles is an author, poet, and a freelance writer. He also taught in the public and private school systems for years as a teachers aide and educator. He also teaches writers workshops throughout the state of California, encouraging new and aspiring authors to stay connected with their literary dreams. Charles is the Executive Director for LABBX and it is his passion to provide you the Reader and you the Author a place where you can come together and share the word. His support of the Spoken Worlds Pavilion is evidence of that mission. Spoken Worlds Concept Founder ~ Merilene Murphy Spoken Worlds was a program created by the late Merilene Murphy which ran concurrent to the early L.A. Black Book Expo as its performance component. Meant in her words to be, a free all-day artistic retreat where new and seasoned artists alike (regardless of age, gender, geography and creative technique) combine their expressions (musically, poetically, graphically, through dance in live on stage performances and in webcasts) to promote world peace for the benefit of humanity and the ecology. Fortunately, Denise L. Cook, The ORACLE, has had the opportunity to revive Spoken Worlds for the LABBX. In the seven years since her death, the expo has kept this as the title of our Spoken Word/Poetry venue which Merilene was in charge in the two years she was coordinator (2004-2005). The past couple years we have expanded Merilenes vision, including Humanitarian, Most Innovative and Lifetime Achievement Awards, one act presentations of literary greats of the past, a live band and more. The expo honors Merilines memory by keeping the concept of Spoken Worlds as a place where freedom of expression is cherished and respected. There you have it. I look forward to seeing you and your families this coming Saturday at the Los Angeles Southwest College. NOTE: The Expo opens FREE to the Public at 10 AM and the Spoken Worlds Pavilion opens at 11 AM. Denise Lyles-Cook, Director, LABBX SWP Aqueila M. Lewis.
