Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes yesterday. It was truly an odd experience to be alone for my first time in New York City, AND, on my birthday. First half of the day was kind of a wash...I was running on zero hours of sleep in the past 48 hours, didnt know where to go to find extraordinary things, couldnt get a hold of any of my friends who live here, it was raining cats and dogs...ugh. But, everything changed when my friend Tahirah Asha Memory slapped me through her phone and convinced me to make my way to Times Square via the metro. I made the decision to just hoof it the 20 blocks from my hotel, which really didnt take that long. Got to Times Square and was astounded at both the volume of people walking around aimlessly and the number of stunningly tall and blingy crystalesque buildings all wrapped tightly in high resolution video screens and frantic reader board stripes. Its really something to see. So now Im beginning to get the picture, but, I still needed a more personal experience. I told Tahirah that i was looking for a place to eat dinner. She suggested this joint called BEA, which was a few, not streets, but avenues away...Im making that distinction because I had no idea of the difference until yesterday, but, NYC avenues are the length of like three regular blocks, or something like that. Anyhow, I walked my self down to BEA, stepped inside, and was immediately diggin the vibe. Dimly lit room, with old black and white movies being projected directly onto the off-white brick walls, and an alluring, well stocked, vaguely pyramid shaped bar being tended by a flirty, camo-clad, beauty named Sheidy. I sat at the bar. I ordered a nut-brown ale and asked Sheidy what her favorite menu entree was. She replied, filet mignon. I agreed. Next thing I know, the GM, Alex, walks over to me, says Are you Jarrod?, I said Yeah skeptically. He says Happy Birthday from Asha Memory., then he sets a double shot of bourbon down on the bar in front of me. Im completely blown away (thank you Asha), not to mention that now I realize Im gonna get drunk tonight...lol. Another hour goes by, Ive now had two pints and a double shot of bourbon when Sheidy, the bartender, pours two miniature wine glasses with something dark and mysterious. She hands me one, says Happy Birthday, I say Whats this?, she replies Romanian moonshine. We clink, we shoot them back, she gives me a kiss, and now Im officially drunk. Great birthday!
