Thank you for FREE EDUCATION..! I would like to commend the government of Fiji for the admirable initiative of providing free education for all students below college this year. I have observed that it has encouraged many struggling families to re-engage their children in school despite other rising costs ie: uniform, stationary etc. The free-bee has also motivated some school leavers to once again enroll into the liberating process and I hope that they would by now have acquired the maturity, and resilience to fully realize and achieve their dreams. It was interesting to observe that many parents linked this development to the fact that elections are just around the corner, and to me, it shows that the Fijian public is neither ignorant nor naive when it comes to the various drama being played out in the country. A parent summed it up pretty well by saying.. “..election gimmick or otherwise…it still is a welcomed relief..! Having worked in a country that provides free education and medical services, I must advice that we parents and teachers must continue to do our part in encouraging and supporting our children to achieve excellence. I have observed in Tuvalu that free services, does not automatically result in high yields. Education is more than just getting the student into the classroom hence there is still a lot of work to be done if we want quality results at the end of the year. I am worried somewhat with the Hand-Out Mentality that always accompanies such free gifts and I hope government has checks in place to monitor developments and ensure that abuse and wastage is discouraged and minimized. All in all, I wholeheartedly believe that this 2014 year is going to be a great one for our beloved nation.. The rumor of Elections seems to be gaining more substance and our International Donors seem to be lending a more Sympathetic Wallet.. ..of course, I still think it wise to maintain the Doubting Thomas approach when it comes to Bainimarama and Khaiyum but then... I am certain of one thing… ..this Free Education is a BLESSING…elections or no elections…! ..GOD BLESS NODA VITI..! :)
