Thank you for adding me to the group. I am a DAR member born and raised in PA, with roots on Long Island. I am trying to establish my lineage to 2 ancestors who were Patriots (Joseph Ruland and William Garrard), but have been flagged because they signed the Oath of Allegiance to King George so alternate service has to be proven after that. I know NYC and Long Island were occupied by the British until the end of the Revolution, so I cant use any kind of alternate service such as taxes, holding local office, etc because all that would have been to the British. So, Im hoping to connect to an expert in Long Island history and records who can tell me if there are records of skirmishes against the British during the occupation (I know about the spy ring, my guys arent part of that). Someone suggested checking to see if my guys filed claims for supplies taken by the British during the occupation, but I have no idea where to look for such records. I basically need something that will show that these men who were members of a Militia before the occupation, signed this Oath unwillingly. Any help or suggestions would be most welcomed! Thanks!
