Thank you for all of the Birthday wishes on this milestone - TopicsExpress

Thank you for all of the Birthday wishes on this milestone birthday (wasnt sure I was going to out myself, but some dear friends helped me out there). But, now that the big 5-0 secret is out of the bag, its time to reflect. Earlier this year when discussing birthdays with a colleague (sorry, JD, all this time I had you believing you were older than me) I said that birthdays beat the alternative. I was accused of being morbid, but that was not my intent. As someone who would have sardonically laughed at you 14 years ago if you told me that I would ever see this milestone (and, most importantly, be around to see my children grow up) I truly understand and believe that birthdays DO beat the alternative. I see 50 as the celebration that it truly is, not as the negative that some people associate with it. Ive learned to live life the past 14 years (although, I can still get caught up in some of the petty stuff from time to time). Ive done things that I never imagined I would and I learned the importance of stopping to smell the roses (or, at least giving them a whiff as I cruise by at warp speed). There are trade-offs of course. I will never know which housewife of Jersey Shores will be trapped on a deserted island and need to learn to sing and dance to survive until next week. But, I do know the thrill of crossing the finish line of a race that people who are far healthier than I will never even attempt. I enjoy the anticipation of a planned climb to the summit of Mount LeConte (Smokies) this summer with a son who is growing up way too fast. I look forward to another semester at a job that can be the hardest job you will ever love. And, I am banking up tears for my daughters college graduation as she debates graduating from Ball State next December, a semester early. I look forward to another year of laughter and tears with each of my FB friends/colleagues/relatives. So, yes, 50 is a celebration of life and it is my Birthday wish that each of you are able to view birthdays as the celebration and gift that they are AND that they truly do beat the alternative! Happy 2015!!!
