Thank you for all your messages of support and questions. I hope this update will answer some of your questions and I apologise for not being able to respond to each of you individually. I have just received an update from Councillor David Tutt, Leader of the Council and this is what he told me: -We have offered to find alternative venues for events the pier had booked e.g. a wedding on the 23 August - we have offered two hotels or the Winter Gardens - Concessionaires who have lost a lot due to being unable to insure - we have offered free stands at Airbourne and at Wednesday and Sunday markets and the loan of stalls - Staff displaced e.g. bar staff, cleaners - our benefits team are geared up to support them and together with Chamber of Commerce and hotels we are looking at what work we can offer them - The Chamber of Commerce have set up a bank account for those wishing to give money under pier benevolent fund, this allows a wide range of uses - We are setting up a micro-site to provide people with constant updates Medium term - this is about understanding the extent of the challenge - Fire investigators are on site - it is treated as a crime scene as a matter of course until there work is complete - Building control and structural engineers go in to assess the level of damage and soundness of the infrastructure - The clean-up operation takes place - We see whether we can get walk ways from the prom to the middle section of the pier to get access for pier team and possibly public in the longer term - The loss adjusters go in (the pier is insured - this is not a Hastings or Brighton situation) Long term - Plans for the rebuilding including design and decisions on whether we can get the public onto the two thirds which are still intact. As you may have already seen, the Prime Minister has announced £2 million of support, to minimise the effect on business and tourism today. This is fantastic news and reinforces the idea that Eastbourne is open for business.
