Thank you for allowing me to join your group. I am a Survivor of Domestic Violence. To that end I have recently published a book 14 years in the making. When I first got out of my Domestic situation I started a program in a local high school entitled And That is What Fairytales are Made Of . . . detailing what domestic violence was, who it affected and explained to teens that not only did it affect husbands and wives, but their children, their families and was often perpetuated on through the lives of children raised in that environment within their dating lives and subsequent marriages. We identified it within dating relationships and individual behaviors, but the program was short lived as my own children became very ill due to medical issues of their own and my attention needed to be turned to them. It has taken me 14 years, but I have finally published a Handbook for Victims/Survivors of Domestic Violence. That book shares the title of my original program. And That is What Fairytales Are Made Of ... Yes, the title is misleading, and purposefully so. The cover was designed to look like a Romance Novelette. Why? To deter interest by the prying eyes of the victims abuser. Put a book down with a serious cover and title and let it be seen, accidentally or on purpose, and an abuser will want to know why their victim is interested in the book. Make the title sound like a sappy romance novel and it is more likely to be dismissed as nonsensical, vapid, and mushy entertainment, easily dismissed. Not only that, but it IS explanatory. Deep down every one of us wants nothing more than to be happy in our lives. The culmination of that happiness is a loving and giving relationship that never requires work, but rather simply happens. THAT is a Fairytale. Love is work, if only in the sense that we must remember to allow each other to grow, support each others interests, accept and love each other even when we may feel strained to our limits both in and outside the relationship. That said my book details how happy relationships can slowly deteriorate into abusive ones. It documents the system of excuses victims make in order to justify the poor treatment of themselves and their children. It depicts some of these instances in detail and explains how they affect not only the direct victims, but the ancillary ones. It is aimed at not only providing victims seeking to end their situation with a course of action to take that will aid them as they progress toward freedom from their abuser, but at helping those victims who are in denial to recognize the situation they are in for what it is. I hope to be able to reinstate that program into our educational systems as well as through treatment programs for Domestic Violence Survivors shortly thereafter. Domestic Violence is an epidemic and the sooner we understand that, both as youths and as individuals within such situations, the sooner we may be able to put an end to it. Application of knowledge to ongoing situations is a long term endeavor. Education in advance as a preventative action could prevent so many more such situations.
