Thank you for so many wonderful, kind greetings on the death of my grandmother. I keep getting asked what can you do for us? we are Ok, we need nothing, but you can do like my Mema did: Feed and house the hungry and homeless- she always had extra food and an extra place for anyone who needed it. Go out and have fun - Bingo may not be your thing like it was for her, but a regular night out having fun is important. Be proud of what you do-she loved being a cook. She was so proud that she had Emeril Lagasse as a High School student working in her cafeteria kitchen, and would often joke she taught him everything he knows even though he always wanted to go play the drums. When I met Emeril a few years ago, and showed him a picture of her, he remembered her vividly and fondly. She worked in many kitchens, from schools, nursing homes, diners and country clubs – she knew everyone from the 4 am hung over diner patron to the mayor and treated them all equally. Be pleasant and polite-but don’t suffer fools gladly. So many of her caregivers spoke of how sweet and easy she was to care for, always thankful for their help. But she also knew how to stick to her guns when needed. Like when her “rotten SOB first husband” wanted back after leaving her with 4 kids to raise-- she had the backbone to say no when saying yes would have made her life easier. Take it easy and drive carefully!! – every one heard that EVERY time as you went to leave. I’d often roll my eyes, but it was her way of saying I love you. And then she’d say that too…..so don’t forget to say that too.
