Thank you for the response...and less of a form letter....my next respondent, #JimRenacci Congressman 16th District Ohio... Dear Wendy, Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 4432, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2014. Your views are important to me as I work to effectively represent you and Ohios 16th Congressional District. Like you, I want to ensure the safety of our food supply and agree that consumers should have the choice to make informed decisions about the products they purchase. It is of great importance to me that regulations regarding food safety and products are routinely reviewed and updated to adequately ensure the safety of our food supply. Current U.S. policy does not require GE-derived foods to be labeled as long as they are substantially the same as their more conventional counterparts. As background, farmers have been modifying plants and animals to improve growth rates and yields for many years, creating varieties resistant to pests and diseases and infusing special nutritional or handling characteristics. Since genetically engineered crop varieties first became commercially available in the mid-1990s, U.S. soybean, cotton, and corn farmers have rapidly adopted them in order to lower production costs and increase crop yields. H.R. 4432 was introduced by Representative Mike Pompeo on April 9, 2014. If enacted into law, this legislation would authorize the Secretary of Agriculture to require the labeling of a food product if deemed necessary to protect the health and safety of Americans. This legislation would also set standards for food labeling if a label claims bioengineering was or was not used in the production process. Finally, this legislation would also amend the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to authorize premarket notification requirements for bioengineered organism used in food products. After being introduced, this legislation was referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee for further review and debate. Although I am not a member of that Committee, I will be sure to keep your views in mind should the legislation come before the House floor for a vote. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me on this issue. In the future I encourage you to visit my website renacci.house.gov where you can email me any other concerns that you have. Additionally, if you would like to stay up to date with what I am doing in the 16th District and in Washington, follow me on Facebook and Twitter at facebook/repjimrenacci and twitter/repjimrenacci. Sincerely, Congressman Jim Renacci
