Thank you for your patience as Ive been away on my mini-sabbatical. Much is happening that I hope to be able to share with you upon my return, assuming Ive got it all sorted out. Ive been watching what is happening in our nation today in the area of race relations, and it troubles me greatly. A lot of what is happening in my life while Ive been away involves reflection, discussion and the consideration of various initiatives around this very issue. Ive been approached by several parties who are familiar with my work, and they believe that I can engage the culture on the issue of race in a more constructive way than what is transpiring in the public square right now. I am honored, humbled and more than a little intimidated by their trust, because there are more intelligent and inspirational people out there than me who have stumbled over this issue, and I know Ill be inviting more scrutiny and criticism from all corners if I commit to doing this. I also dont want to get ahead of God or lag behind him, either. As Moses said, If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here (Exodus 33:15). As I reflect on all of this, this Bible verse keeps intruding on my thoughts: When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, Do you want to get well? (John 5:6). My observation is that there are people on both sides of the racial divide between black and white that have no interest in getting well, whatever their reasons may be. I am not interested in appealing to them. I want to reach those people who truly want our nation to get well, and are willing to work together in a positive and affirming way to do it. Most importantly, I want to do this Gods way, not the worlds way. So please pray for me as I mull over the decisions I must make. I am blessed with a meaningful and fulfilling job as an educator and administrator at a Christian institution, and I could be perfectly content in my vocation, my family and my church for the rest of my life. As Mary learned over 2,000 years ago, however, God comes into our lives and interrupts our well-laid plans, and while His will is guaranteed to lead us down some rough roads, the destination is always more glorious than we can ever imagine. If it is His will that I be interrupted, then I hope my answer will be as faith-filled as Marys: I am the Lords servant...May your word to me be fulfilled (Luke 1:38). May your Christmas be blessed, and may your New Year be filled with promise!
