Thank you friends and family for all the birthday wishes! I wanted to reflect on the last year since it has been one of my favorites. 25. This year was full of adventure, long drives, beautiful scenery and people, and experiences Ill be talking about for years to come. I finished graduate classes at Penn State for my Masters degree. I finally birded the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. I gazed slackjawed as thousands of croaking Sandhill Cranes flew over my head. I bathed in the morning sun beside Greater Roadrunners while scouring the horizon for Hook-billed Kites (no luck). I fell in love. Then convinced that girl to wait while I drove to the Pacific Ocean and back over the course of 3 months. Kelsey, you are amazing and Im so glad you asked me out for a Pittsburgh Penguins game almost a year ago. I subsequently fell in love with the mountains. I watched a mob of Gray Jays lead me to a striking Northern Goshawk, perched in a Lodgepole Pine at 8,000 feet in complete wilderness. I joined 3 former Pennsylvanians and an entire town in tubing down the Clark Fork in Missoula, Montana. I bathed in a natural hot spring, and then another, and another, and another. I woke up on a spire-covered beach to crying Glaucous-winged Gulls and gently receding waves. I scanned through flocks of Tufted Puffins, Pigeon Guillemots, and Rhinoceros Auklets while a Gray Whale swam directly underneath my perch on a jutting cliff. I bonded with a one-eyed Native American gas station clerk. I retired a pair of boots. I walked my sister down the aisle. And much more. 26. I dare you to be better.
