In this month alone, heres what happened with the Virunga situation that encourages us: We surpassed 650,000 signatures on our petition demanding oil giant Soco Internationals immediate retreat from Virunga. Many thanks to you for signing it! An international agency, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, has accepted WWFs complaint that highlights allegations of lack of transparency and human rights violations related to Socos operations in Virunga. At a hearing on Capitol Hill yesterday, US Senator Christopher Coons and actor Ben Affleck urged the State Department to engage with the Democratic Republic of Congo on upholding its laws prohibiting environmentally harmful activities, including oil exploration, in Virunga and other protected areas. French oil company Total SA, which has an oil concession overlapping Virunga, publicly committed to keeping out of all natural World Heritage Sites. Please help us keep the momentum going by sharing our petition with your friends. Virunga is home to more varieties of rare plants and animals than any other protected area in Africa.
