Thank you so much for all your great questions and your interest in studying in the United States! (on.fb.me/15dfAz9) Supporting higher education is one of our priorities, and we do our best to respond to questions and support those interested in seeking to study in the U.S. Interest is so high, and we received so many questions in response to our FB chat that we just can’t answer every one. Our apologies if we missed any issues. We have looked at all of the questions and tried to answer as many as possible, and when not addressed the main themes. Thanks again for your interest and please keep coming back with more questions if we did not answer them here! Here is what we have for now in response: First, we had many general questions and comments about the process of applying to U.S. schools in certain subject areas. In response to these, we wanted to note that application procedure to US institutions of higher education has the following components. 1. Select a school or schools ( we have 4700 accredited institutions) that you think is your best fit. There is tons of information on the internet, but look for ACCREDITED schools. Do not always aim for Harvard or Stanford as there are so many excellent schools that may be easier to get into! 2. Think about financing your studies through full, partial financial aid, or your own funds. There are many opportunities for funding, but make sure you address this issue first and have a general strategy before applying. 3. Meet testing requirements ( TOEFL for both Graduate and undergraduate, SAT for Undergraduate only and GRE for graduate only). All foreign students must take the TOEFL, and each program you apply for will require various tests. This will be on the school’s web site. 4. Meet all application deadlines and requirements!!! American schools are not flexible on deadlines, so if they give a date that is a deadline, they are serious about that! 5. If you are accepted, you then must apply for your visa. You cannot go unless you get a visa, and acceptance does not guarantee a visa. Check out this process on the Embassy or university web site 6. Book your flight and travel to the US and enjoy your education!!! You can get much more information on this by visiting our Educational Advising Center at the US Embassy in Addis where we hold weekly orientation sessions for students interested in studying in the U.S. You are welcome to come any Thursday afternoon ( 2 to 5 pm), but do not forget to bring a valid ID! We also have information on studying in the U.S> at our American Corners in Jimma, Bahir Dar, Harar and Dire Dhawa (ethiopia.usembassy.gov/american_corners.html). You can also visit the following web site for more information -- educationusa.info/ Third, many of you asked about how to apply for specific programs in nursing or engineering or other specific areas. The broad answer to this is that you need to find universities that offer these programs, and then see what they require. That information is available on the internet. You can also come to one of our Educational Advising sessions at the Embassy every Thursday afternoon. And here are some answers to specific questions: What i want to ask is: i want to study in USA but with my family , is it possible? This is possible but it is expensive and sometimes more difficult to get visas for all. You will have to address this issue separately once you get admitted to a university and secured funding for the education. What level of graduate student will have a chance? All levels are accepted, but they are all very competitive I really want to Study in MA programmes but I have no clue about available colleges as well as Field of studies. It would mean a lot to me if u would help me in finding them n guide me through the enrollment process. I would encourage you to come to an Educational Advising session at the Embassy on Thursday afternoons, or visit an American Corner or the IRC in Addis. Finally, you can find a vast amount of information on the internet, so that would be a good place to start. What does American Universities given more emphasis to when looking ay the application of students: previous academic achievement, Work experience, extra curricular activities ...? There is no set answer to this. Each university looks at it differently, but in general one can say that universities look at your entire record and not just exams or grades. References and work experience are very important, but you must also get good grades, test scores and write a good essay in your application! Is there any way to get scholarship in longer track pursuits like medicine? And what does it take? This is possible at the graduate level, but would likely require a student to work as well. Scholarships are financial aid are university specific so you have to check out each one. There are also some private foundations that may offer such funding. I want to know the standards to get the visa. I ask this question because two individuals couldnt treat the same with the same documentation, experience and field of study. some times both can get the visa or One might get the other fail or both would fail. What is the reason for such kind of situation? It is important to demonstrate that you have the financial resources to support yourself and your education and that you have sufficient ties to Ethiopia so you will return once you compete your education. Does the university and field of study we would like to go and attend affect the chance to get the visa? No What are the acceptable Universities for Computer Science or Information Technology field if u have the list in case and which one would like to accept international students? We have such lists and information at our Mercian Corners and the Information Resource Center at the Embassy in Addis. You can also find a lot of information on the internet. I am deaf and i have BA in Ethiopian sign langauge and Deaf culture. now i want to study Gallladuet university so how i can find it? please tell me more information. Thanks. You should check out their web site at gallaudet.edu/ Almost all US universities ask GRE and TOFL results to pursue education. Can we find someones that apply quota systems as many European universities. This is because attending both of the examinations is costly and difficult to fond nearest centers. U.S. universities require these exams so you must take them, and U.S. universities they do not have quota systems.
