Thank you to ALL who have served our country throughout its history. Sharing a little Tuskegee Airmen history in the Liggins family... My great uncle, Vincent Liggins, graduated as salutatorian from Xenia East High School in Xenia, OH; graduated from Wilberforce University; and was accepted into Maharry Medical College, where he planned to become a doctor. WWII interrupted that plan, as he was drafted. In 1943, he was accepted, trained and then graduated from the second graduating class of the new experimental Air Cadet program at Tuskegee Field in Alabama. 2nd Lt. Liggins was killed on March 9, 1944 when his fighter plane from the 301st Fighter Squadron, U. S. Army Air Corps, crashed in Montecorvino, Italy. The day before his death, he and three others in his squadron were credited with the unit’s first combat mission--something new for black fliers.
