Thank you to Miss Cambridge who has provided us with a fantastically comprehensive round-up of our weekend sports results.... It goes without saying that we have an incredibly dedicated sports / PE department whose time and commitment are integral to our hard won successes.. IGSSA: Three teams traveled to Sydney last weekend to compete in the IGSSA Finals. Both Junior and Senior Hockey played at Homebush Hockey Fields, while the Junior Netball travelled to Five Dock to play. Well done to all teams. The girls played with heart and determination and should be commended on their work ethic throughout the season. The Senior Hockey team narrowly went down to Danebank in the first final 2-1. Finishing third in Senior Division 2. The Junior Hockey team won against Kambala in their first final 2-0. This meant that they progressed through to the top junior division grand final. In this game they played Pymble, whom they defeated 2-1 to become the champion of Junior Division 1. The Junior Netball team played an undefeated Danebank in the first final of the day whom they beat 20-14. They then progressed through to the grand finals playing PLC Sydney who only narrowly beat PLC Armidale to make the grand finals. The girls played hard the entire game maintaining an even score until the last five minutes where PLC Sydney pulled away to win 25-22. Therefore, the girls were runners up in Junior Division 2. Special thanks to our coaches Mrs Swartz, Blair Chalmers, Emma Ellis and Lara Askey, who filled in at the last minute when Emma was unable to attend and Tony the bus driver, who was forever on time and efficient. Hockey: On the weekend the HNE Grand Finals were also played with two NEGS teams featuring. Under 13 NEGS Red played a tough game on Saturday, while missing some players at IGSSA against Breakaways and went down 5-0 ending the season as Runners Up. A special mention to Priscilla Clonan, who according to some neutral bystanders (and an umpire) pulled off some amazing saves in the goals that everyone was very impressed by. Under 16 NEGS Royal had half their team return from IGSSA to play their Grand Final on Sunday. They too played Breakaways and after a short corner pushed out by Emily Knox, Clare Askey slotted the ball home. The only goal scored in the game with the final score 1-0 and NEGS Royal becoming the Under 16 Champions for 2014. The girls also had some success at the HNE Presentation with Isabella Watson winning the best female Under 21 Goalkeeper. Both Sarah and Clare Askey being nominated for the best and fairest player in the Under 16 competition and finally, Clare Askey being awarded the junior ‘Player exemplifying the ideals of hockey’. Well done to all hockey players for a successful year under the new NEGS Hockey Program. Thank you to our coaches, teacher supervisors, parent managers and supporters. Your endless support in shocking weather is appreciated by all the players. Netball: Our St John’s netballers who combined with some external players to make the CGA Rockstars also participated in the Primary 2 Grand Finals on the weekend. A tight game was played with the score even with the Ben Venue Wizards up until the last quarter. With some tight defence by Bella Johnson, feeding from Issy Gooch and Nicola Clarkson and some long shot accuracy by Lottie Claridge and Hayley Whitehill, the girls eventually won to become the champions of their division. Eloise Gooch, also a St John’s student, was lucky enough to be a part of the VIP Poppies who were awarded the Primary Encouragement Award. Basketball: Lastly we have two teams in the basketball finals this week. NEGS 10 and NEGS Red will be playing hard this Tuesday and Wednesday night to win the 9/10 division and Women’s D Grade respectively. We wish them all the best of luck in the lead up.
