Thank you to Ms. Ruth Bishop for her service to our community as a volunteer and a kind letter to the editor. We hope you will all show your support by volunteering to help in the recovery effort. Tupelo’s mayor joined a hard-working team Over the Memorial Day weekend, I traveled with a group from my church in Gulfport to Tupelo to help with clean-up, as so many had done for us after Katrina. We volunteered with United Way through St. Luke’s Methodist Church and wound up in a neighborhood not too far from the church at the home of a nice young family who are members there. I am always moved by the kindness of friends and neighbors, but a particular stranger stopped by our worksite. He didn’t know the young family and didn’t attend their church. He just saw a need, a group hard at work and stopped to help. He offered his jeep to help pull huge trees out of the yard. He stayed and lifted and pulled and piled and sweated all afternoon with the rest of us until the assigned jobs were done. It was midway through the afternoon that we learned that it was Jason Shelton, your mayor in Tupelo. I know nothing about your local politics, but this young man has put a new face on the term “public servant” for me. Mayor Shelton is a breath of fresh air. Ruth Bishop Gulfport
