Thank you to all the Denton citizens and visiting citizens from places like Arlington and Oklahoma that came out to the #passtheban city council meeting last night to speak in favor of the ban. After over 100 speakers (that also included industry reps) that stretched to 3 in the morning, and over 200 cards in support of the ban and over 500 attendees and personal story after story about how the residents in Denton have personally experienced nose bleeds, headaches and asthma, and how they worry about their children. And after hearing industry reps from all over say that the world is watching and the tsunami of exclusion for fracking could begin here and other cities would follow, I, for the life of me, cannot understand why why WHY our city council would not pass the ban to be the example to the world of finally standing up to an industry that is blatantly lying to people about the safety and practice of drilling to protect their own interests. We had a real chance, with so much momentum building to this moment, all the work from Frack Free Denton to gather petition signatures and all the 911 calls about bad smells and sounds and the helpless people in other cities all over the states that have tried to call the managers of the wells around their house to make sense of what is happening, with no resolution, that were watching us, in the heart of Texas oil and gas drilling, depending on us to be the first ripple in the tsunami that would show the world that Denton Texas will not be bullied by the industry, that Denton Texas cares about the health of its citizens, that Denton, Texas is willing to take a risk and stand up and be an example to the world. I am deeply disappointed in the whole of our city leadership, save Kevin Roden, who was the sole vote for the ban, and Im saddened at this missed opportunity to stand up for human rights.
