Thank you to friends from Ready4Work.my for publishing an interview about Gen Ys and my experience as Tonys apprentice. Ready4Work.my is the go-to portal for students and graduates who want to know more about what they need to know in entering the working world. Here are snippets of the interview: Q: What would you tell your 21 year-old self today? A: I’d tell him that he’s up for a wild roller coaster ride but it will be fun and worth it. There will be so many up’s and down’s and it will never end. On the hindsight of looking back, I’d also tell him to be less serious and less uptight (because I was when I was 21!!!) Q: Are internships (for students) truly important? Schools are there to teach you the hard skills—business acumen, theories on management, analytical skills, etc. but they will always fall short in teaching you the soft skills—leadership, networking, influence, body language, etc. Internships will allow students to get a first taste of the corporate world and make them understand that success in the workplace is also about EQ and not just IQ. A: Internships will also force the students to ask themselves while on the job: is this really what I want? Do i see myself doing this for the next 5 years? This is the best opportunity to examine one’s career choice. After all, you only realize the things that you like once you also experience the things that you don’t like. Q: When you first started as Tony Fernandes’ apprentice it must have been a huge learning curve for you. What motivated you to give your best? A: Huge learning curve is an understatement *laughs*. I knew from the very start that everything under Tony will be new. New industry, new people, new ways of working with a different culture. I knew that I was set up to commit many mistakes—but I saw those as opportunities of stretching myself out of my comfort zone (and proving to everyone that I can take it to the next level). I know that looking back 5 years from now, I wouldn’t have traded this experience for the world because it has changed me permanently for good. Learning is a painful process but they key is to enjoy because it will be worth it in the end. That prize motivated me well. Q: Who makes you nervous? A: Any person I’m dating makes me nervous! I’m not dating (unfortunately) anyone now (yes, Im single!!!), but that’s always a classic experience for me. ready4work.my/career-guide/stories/been-there-done-that/jonathan-yabut-winner-apprentice-asia
