The intensity of the light on the cloud is extraordinary, and the patch of light catching the peak on the left adds depth and drama to the image. One of the challenges of photographing high mountains is conveying a sense of their immensity, as there are usually few visual reference-points. This problem is largely resolved here by the swirling mist and by a composition that leads the eye up a receding series of increasingly massive ridges and slopes. The image is technically well rendered, if a little underexposed. Unfortunately the cloud that provides much of the drama obscures what is presumably the summit, which is consequently upstaged by the peaks on either side. (I find myself resorting to logic to convince myself that yes, that must be the summit behind the cloud.) The comparatively undramatic foreground ridge, and the fact that we can’t see the sides or lower slopes of the mountain, also robs the image of some of its power.
