Thankfully, Election Day is quickly approaching. Not only will we vote for candidates of our choice, but we will also be voting on five amendments as well. They are: 1.) protecting Alabama citizens from foreign law and that pesky full, faith and credit clause of the Constitution, 2.) authorizes the state to borrow money for the maintenance and repair of our National Guard Armories, 3.) requiring strict scrutiny court review for gun restrictions 4.) requiring more votes from each respective legislative body before the Legislature can pass an unfunded mandate; and 5.) creates the Sportspersons Bill of Rights to protect Alabamians right to hunt and fish. Concerning Amendment 1, I urge you to vote NO. It is a solution looking for a problem. Alabama law already prohibits Alabama courts from enforcing contractual provisions that violate the public policies of the state. Amendment 1 is pure electioneering that actually interferes with our freedom to contract. Save Alabama the trouble and embarrassment and please just vote no. Amendment 3, the gun amendment, is another solution searching for a problem. What more protection do we need than the current constitution that establishes that the right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental right? Alabama is already an open carry state. As a matter of fact, Alabama had fewer gun restrictions before the legislature got involved a few years ago and created our own terribly confusing gun bill. Basically, all this amendment will do is create unnecessary lawsuits and more confusion. Again do us all a favor and vote NO. Amendment 5 essentially doesnt do anything. It attempts to establish that Alabamians have the right to hunt, fish, and harvest using traditional methods (i.e, kill them with a gun, crossbow, spear, your bare hands) for generations to come. Really? In Alabama? The right to hunt, fish, and harvest wildlife in Alabama has never been threatened and never will. This is yet another solution looking for a problem. Again do us all a favor and vote NO. Amendments 2 and 4, arent necessarily as bad as the other 3 and actually attempt to address real issues. Although I plan on voting no on those as well, there are legitimate concerns in Alabama with the state of disrepair of our armories and also with the Alabama Legislature creating unfunded mandates on local school boards. At least they are not thinly veiled attempts at electioneering that arent real issues in Alabama. So please, I am begging you, for Alabamas sake, vote no on Amendments 1,3 and 5. Please encourage your friends to do as well.
