Thankfully we have more and more options for diagnosing and monitoring disease stall side or on the farm. This little gadget is a portable device that measures serum amyloid A (SAA) in the blood. Under normal healthy conditions SAA is not detectable. However, levels increase within 12–24 hours after the onset of infection or certain other inflammatory conditions (pneumonia, influenza, etc, but not in allergies for example). We can use this information to track response to antibiotics and be more precise with our treatments.
