Thanks Daisy Lapetite for the pic! What a great couple of hours that was! Connecting with people who are active in the community around so many issues, from helping refugees to indigenous health and education to GLBTQI law reform campaigners to disability support and so on and so on. So many people that spend so much time caring for others, but still find time to come together in a mass celebration of love and humanity against the mean-spirited, heartless, greed-is-good selfishness that our new government tries to make our dominant culture. We are more than an economy, we are a society. Today really re-affirmed that despite the fact that Abbott won by a slim majority of the vote (unsurprisingly with his media cheer squad led by Murdoch and the shock jocks) there are still a huge number of Australians who care more about the poor, the oppressed, the marginalised and the dispossessed than they do about making more money for their own comfort and pleasure. There is still an Australia that cares enough to get off their arses and support the case for a more caring, humane society. We may be outnumbered, we may be outgunned, we may be sneered at by those who claim our resistance is futile and useless, but we will not go quietly. We saw what happened in the 20th Century when obedience to authority, from totalitarian regimes of every flavour, led to mass slaughter. The road to dictatorship is paved with silence, obedience and acquiescence - the doctrine of there is no alternative. It is better to die on your feet than live on your knees. Never again the shuffle to the showers. Never again the march to the forest. Never again the digging of our own graves. Go down swinging, were all going to die anyway.
