Thanks Katie for the ice bucket challenge nomination! Im going - TopicsExpress

Thanks Katie for the ice bucket challenge nomination! Im going to do mix things up a bit and do it a bit differently. 1. I wont be dumping a bucket of ice water on my head. 2. While the ALS Association is a FANTASTIC organization and deserves ALL of the support its received and more, I will not be donating to ALS. But anyone who wants to should: alsa.org/ and should take time to read more about what the organization does: alsa.org/about-us/ Instead, I will be donating to organizations that have had a personal impact on my life and those who I deeply care about. 1. The Alzheimers Association (alz.org/) My grandmother and uncle both suffered from this crippling disease for several years. While they are both no longer with us today, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimers and is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. Currently there is no cure for Alzheimers disease, however the Alzheimers Association is helping researchers look for new treatments to alter the course of the disease and improve the quality of life for people living with dementia. 2. National Parkinson Foundation (parkinson.org/) My nana was diagnosed with #Parkinsons years ago and at the time, I didnt understand what it meant. However, in time, I watched her lose the ability to perform the most basic of human functions. My pop had to go out of retirement to afford all of the costs associated with caring for someone with Parkinsons. And shes not alone. 50,000-60,000 cases of PD are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, adding to the 1+ million who have already been diagnosed and is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimers. The NPF has funded more than $180 million in care, research and support services since being founded. To those doing more than just dumping ice water on your head and going out to research and donate to ALSA or another charity of your choice, major kudos to you. And for those just dumping ice water on your head and who arent donating as well, perhaps consider donating to charity: water - there are millions of people in developing countries who would love some of that clean water thats being poured over your head. charitywater.org/ I nominate Mike Young, Marissa Ianni and Adrian Fuentes to also donate to the charity of their choice - in the amount of their choice. “The purpose of life is to contribute in some way to making things better.” ― Robert F.
