There is a legend that strawberries were named in the 19th centery by English children who picked the fruit, strung them on grass straws, and sold them as "Straws of Berries". ~ Fun Facts About Strawberries ~ 1) The strawberry is a member of the rose family. 2) The strawberry is not classified by botanists as a true berry. True berries, such as blueberries and cranberries, have seeds inside. The strawberry has its dry, yellow "seeds" on the outside, each of which is actually considered a separate fruit. 3) The average strawberry has 200 seeds. 4) Strawberries are low in calories - 1 cup of unsweetened strawberries has only 55 calories. 5) Strawberries are good sources of Vitamin C, folic acid, potassium and fiber. 6) Strawberries are the first fruit to ripen in the spring. 7) A strawberry will not ripen once it is picked. 8) Strawberries for headaches??? They contain natural salicylates which is an ingredient that is found in aspirin. 9) In ancient times, the Romans believed that strawberries helped alleviate symptoms of melancholy, inflammation, fainting, fevers, blood disease, and many other ailments. 10) The largest strawberry on record weighs 8.17 ounces and was the size of a big apple. Strawberry Shortcake 1 yellow cake mix 3 large eggs 1/3 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup sugar, plus 3 tablespoons 3 pints strawberries, stemmed and sliced 3 cups heavy cream Directions: Prepare and bake cake as directed on package. Sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar over strawberries and set aside (to release juices) Whip heavy cream with 3 tablespoons sugar til stiff peaks form. Layer cake - strawberries - whipped cream and repeat. Serve immediately. Strawberry Smoothie 1 1/2 cups milk 1 cup strawberries 2 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 cup crushed ice Directions: Put all ingredients into blender and process until smooth. ENJOY!
