Thanks Susan R. I am thinking that Fred Holland teacher friends would love to repost this one... Teachers in this country are getting hit with both ends of the stick, because education was left out of the Constitution so its a States Rights matter. And that is not to our advantage in a global economy where other countries have more centralized and nationally managed instruction. I am feed-up with the notion that there is no way to fix this problem ... and maybe half a dozen others ... that everyone in the country feels are real problems but no one seems to be in a position to orchestrate a solution under our Federal and State system conflicts. So, Congress just kicks the can on down the road, while the No Child Left Behind keeps kicking the behinds of both good and bad teachers in the classrooms all over the country. Fred Holland has Been there. Done that. and has lots of school T-shirts in his closet that reflect all the so-called solutions that TEA has tried over a score of years going all the way back to the last Century... to my way of thinking, it boils down to TRUST. I read an interesting piece on the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence this week that noted that Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter in which he felt that 1/3 of the nation was for forming a new government and declaring ourselves free from England, another 1/3 were strongly opposed to forming a new government and abandoning colonial rule by England... and the remaining 1/3 were either undecided or just not concerned about it. Heck... that is the way it has been all my life in this country: Two will argue a point and another person will just stand and watchem... and as a crowd gathers around the two, some will start making bets on who is right and who is wrong so they profit either way. This Democracy or Republic thing we have is just 238 years old this year... we need to start taking a longer view and be realistic about what we can change and what we can not change over the next 62 years ... and be willing to change... because sitting here and arguing in the road is not going to take USA anywhere.
