Thanks a lot to the folks who are slowly filling up the halls for Shesh Boley Kichu Nei. I am deeply grateful for their time and patience for sitting through a slow film. I praised and patted myself years ago for choosing to act in supposedly slow, long films like Kharij and Juganto. Its very nice to see there are people who still care for CINEMA. Thanks again. But the question still remains. The amount of people who saw Juganto or Antareen were very small in numbers compared to the number of shows and budget today. Because of being more MODERN, more accessible to the global scenario, are there MORE folks who will appreciate the todays global scenario sitting here in Kolkata? Or are they basically computer savy but like dated stuff? And I will have to face the same consequences like my director Buddhadev Dasgupta sitting here in Kolkata? Have we progressed and more people can admire work not by its length but quality? I have received lots of mails congratulating me for my work. But have also received reactions in the media and audience saying that its Fat, slow, filled with cliches. What are CLICHES? I hope this page stops being populist and starts being proactive about changes. Starts being in sync with the global scenario. Most of you keep referring to my songs because they reflected a certain time and spirit of a time you grew up with. My question is what is the CINEMA you grew up with? Which movie made you feel the way Ami Brishishti Dekhechi or Khepa Shohor or Bela Bose? Which film? Which film made you understand Kolkata Sholo or Duto Manush or Khader Dharer Railing ta...? Which Bengali film? This is about knowing there are Masters today called Alexander Inarittu or Micheal Haneke. When I started writing song, people like Donovan, John Denver, Don Macleans, or if I may add with a lot of fear, Bob Dylan inspired me. When I started acting it was Bobby DNero or Harvey Keitel. When I started making movies I could not ignore Wong Kar Wai and only think of my Kolkata cinema...Nor did my directors in their times, who were perhaps inspired by Godard or Bresson. When I gave my first shot for Mrinal Sens Chaalchitra, the acting reference for me was Dhritiman Chatterjee of Pratidwandi by Ray. For Grihajuddha it was Padatik By Sen. Somewhere Bobby DNero collided with Dhritiman Chatterjee in my amateur soul...What collides with your soul as an audience? Nostalgia? I hereby am trying to say goodbye to Bengali cinema as a Director not because I am tired of it but I feel a certain lack of dynamism in the Bengal scenario. I miss the debate, the intellectual interaction from someone who seriously has seen the global scenario of today. I do not want to enter into insipid conversations. You should have your criticisms. But when you do, kindly do not go to see a movie just for entertainment. Do not expect Kabir Suman (no matter how much I differ from him) to be just populist. No one is the last word. Kindly just believe that any art form has a history.
