Thanks em yeu Thao for helping me submit my thesis. Glad the 18-month programme is over, yet will miss my enthusiastic batchmates. Now I can finally read through and appreciate the many useful readings without academic pressures. And I hereby append my acknowledgement page to thank all of the wonderful people who have been of great support and help: A thesis is never the work of anyone alone. The contributions of many people, in their different ways, have made this possible. Firstly, I am most grateful to my thesis supervisor, Dr Vivienne Wee, whose insightful comments and suggestions have been exceptionally beneficial to me, not just in the completion of this paper, but also to the critical thinking and learning journey. I want to thank my employer, National Trades Union Congress, as well as friends from Chemical Industries Employees’ Union for the support towards my academic pursuit. Fellow Grassroots Leaders and Constituency Office staff at People’s Association have also been encouraging me along the way. The topic of the thesis is primarily inspired from the experience working with low-wage union members and low-income residents. I am thankful to the Grassroots Leaders and CCC ComCare recipients who agreed to participate in the study. Their open and candid sharing contributed to fruitful findings. I would like to thank Phuong Thao for her personal support and great patience at all times. Our discussions have also been illuminating. Advice, comments and encouragement given by Kai Yan have also been a great help. My family has given me their unequivocal support throughout, ensuring that I am well-nourished from late nights with tonics, care and concern. Words cannot express the gratitude I have for them. Last but not least, I deeply appreciate the opportunity to learn from fellow classmates and lecturers of the pioneer batch of the MCLSD Programme.
