Thanks for a wonderful House Tour---to everyone who shared their homes and helped sell tickets and prepped the town behind the scenes, and to all the hardy tour-trekkers who shared the joy and stood up to Saturday’s rainy weather. Like a community work of art, you made it worth all the struggle to create. And it IS a work of art. Theres probably nothing lovelier in Bridgeton than its annual House Tour--convivial and communal yet individual and personal, all at the same time. This year’s was no exception--a tribute to the hard work of folks all over town, and a special tribute to Carola Hartley and her team at Bridgeton Main Street. That tribute is bittersweet as we say goodbye to Carola, who packed her last van on that very day, and pulled out of Commerce Street headed south and careerward to her home state of Louisiana. ‘Sorry to see you go’ is the definition of understatement We were lucky to have you, darlin. You leave so many wonderful memories--so much community spirit. You leave so many friends--aching and laughing at the same time. (Lord, what WILL we do without Boudreau?) You will be followed but not replaced. Your elegant signature is now inscribed on our life stories. We hope to nurture the special joy--resilience--grace (and good humor)--under pressure that you brought--that we still need. They are a model of the possible for Bridgeton community life. Our parting gift to you?--that we WILL strive to keep them. That well take confidence from the good work you did here--that what was done can be done again, and in the Hartley spirit, always better and better. See you on the bayou!
