Thanks for all the comments about my bird pictures. I should have explained where we were. My landlord and I have become friends. We have somewhat different interests in photography , but that and our Corgis has been the base of our friendship. John, (JJ), Phillips is a contributing writer and photographer for Bird Watching magazine. He took me to High Island yesterday. There are four rookeries there, one of the largest group in the country. We were at the rookery where these birds nest. I think it is Smiths Woods. The Herons and Spoonbills are the first to come in and build nests. Other species come in at different times. There are some Cormorants and a few Grebes. The complex at High Island is operated by the Houston Audubon Society. They have built bleachers at Boy Scout Woods for the observation of the songbirds that go in there. At the place I was at on Clay Bottom Pond, there are four balcony-type observation platforms that you can stand comfortably on and observe and photograph the birds. i have only seen these two places, so I do not know what is there. There is a website that gives information on the four rookeries and how to get to them and which birds are there and when they are expected to be there. They do ask for a $7 admission fee, or you can buy a patch for $25 that is good all year. The money goes to the upkeep of the places. During the drought a couple of years ago they paid the City of High Island $50,000 for water to keep the water level high enough at Clay Bottom Pond. That was necessary to keep the land animals off of the smell island where the birds roost. It is an interesting place to visit. I was about 50-60 feet from the birds I shot. Since it is in the marsh....take skeeter spray. They are hungry......
