Thanks for all the help and tips for my violasitis, everyone! I finally had an amazing doctor/shoulder specialist in Ft. Collins that gave me some diagnoses: After taking several x-rays of my shoulder and neck and watching me do a few exercises, he was able to identify all the things that are wrong. In laymans terms, my body is biomechanically incorrect in many ways on the left side from playing viola. Doctor speak: neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome, left and right scapulothoracic dyskinesia, and post inferior capsular tightness. This causes the pain, nerve symptoms, and muscular tightness. My spine is curved incorrectly in my neck- where it should continue to curve it now goes straight because of muscle spasms and rightness in my neck. My shoulders are way too far forward and tight, my scalenes tight and immobile. Instead of rotating properly, my left scapular wings out when I lift my arm up. With rest, a lot of hard work with a good physical therapy, the proper weightlifting and stretches/exercises, I should be able to retrain my body in 6 to 9 months. While he said quitting my job and refraining from playing for this time would make the healing faster, he correctly guessed that I love my job and want to keep it, and said that I should be able to play hurt for a while as long as I am working hard to retrain and fix all these problems, with little risk or further injury
