Thanks for sharing Dawna Allison (ZCC) Once upon a time, there was a girl with a ‘gift’. She could speak in a way that caused people to listen and rehearsed her gift daily so she would appear even more gifted. The gift grew and improved so much that it started to take on a life of its own. It became unwieldy, dangerous and unpredictable until it was no longer a gift but a burden. What had changed? What had happened? God’s word says in James 3:6 that “the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.” We’ve all seen the destruction that can come from a small fire that gets out of hand and turns into a raging inferno. It rarely stays contained and, once past a certain point, its spread and is nearly impossible to stop. Before it becomes a blazing bonfire, though, it starts out as just an ember. That’s how the gift was. As a student, I loved Speech class; English was my ‘thing’. I even fancied myself a creative writer, a poet. But as I got older and my life got more unmanageable, the words that came so easily off my lips turned from poetry to poison. Success was measured in how many arguments I won, how many times I was proven right and how quickly I could cut down my opponent. I took pride in being able to inflict pain with my words when someone was hurting me. And then Jesus happened. And He rescued me from the endless supply of venom that I had stored up. I saw my tongue for what it was; an instrument for blessing. “With our tongues we bless God our Father; with the same tongues we curse the very men and women he made in his image. Curses and blessings out of the same mouth! My friends, this can’t go on.” James 3:9-10 It’s true, it can’t go on. Where are you on the forest fire scale? Will you dare to surrender your tongue to the One who made it? Can you trust Him to redeem your words and use them for His glory?
