Thanks to Backseat Mafia for their enthusiastic review of Live At The Lexington! This band was always criminally underrated and were more victims of bad timing rather than anything else, slipping in between the end of The Smiths era and the onset of grunge and Britpop. The delicacy of the sound and Guy Chadwick’s hypnotising vocals and orchestral, soaring choruses were drowned out by noise elsewhere and they never quite got as much of the limelight as they should have. Band members squabbled, finances went awry – the usual travails of a band. But the integral member of the band have reconciled and it’s business as usual. The sheer magnificence of songs like “Destroy the Heart”, “Shine On”, “Christine”, “The Beatles and the Stones” and “I Don’t Know Why I Love You” are all represented on this CD/DVD and it is awe inspiring to see them do it live with as much enigma and presence as in their hey day. The set list covers some of their newer songs as well – illustrating the fact that they still have the melodic super powers they always had – witness “A Baby Got Back on its Feet”. This is a fantastic bundle – the quality of the production is outstanding, the songs played with great precision and the gig is captured brilliantly. backseatmafia/2014/11/21/new-musicvideo-the-house-of-love-live-at-the-lexington/
