Thanks to Chris Morris for reminding me that John Coltranes A Love Supreme was recorded 50 years ago today. Im not some intense jazzbo whos spent thousands of hours digesting Blue Note and Impulse vinyl. But, Ive spent enough time with the genre to know that this is one of the more monumental artistic efforts of the 20th century. I know, its jazz, so automatically its gonna alienate like 90% of people. And then Coltrane makes you work for it, so probably another 5% will drop out. But, it you stick with it, its a magical, soulful journey. A Love Supreme is the sound of a guy fighting off demons to speak with angels and youre lucky that you have the chance to hear that struggle. A love supreme ... a love supreme ... a love supreme ...
