Thanks to David Beck for helping to clear this up! After being shouted at by numerous people that the Union flag has no place at the commonwealth games because the UK is not a country I can now refer them to an official email back from the games themselves. Hi David, The Union Jack flag can be brought into venues by spectators. The only restriction would be regarding size – flags larger than 1m x 2m would not be permitted (this would apply to all flags). While non-competing country flags or flags affiliated to other organisations or causes, political or other are restricted, flags normally associated with countries participating in the Games (e.g. Union Jack flag, Kiwi Silver Fern, Boxing Kangaroo etc) are allowed.
