Thanks to Erika Gara for making me aware of this article and the renewed attack on food stamps, officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Five years ago I never would have guessed how many people I knew who relied on SNAP just to have enough food to eat each month. Most of the people I know are elderly, have disabilities or chronic health conditions that prevent them from working. How easily we overlook the fact that most people who are poor try to disguise themselves and usually successfully pass themselves off as middle class because of the stigma, shame, derision and ostracism we as a society bestow upon those who are poor and, yes, disabled, especially when it comes to those living with the burden of chronic physical and mental illness. The truth is that many people eligible for food stamps are too ashamed or afraid to apply for them. The forms people have to complete are imposing even for social workers!
