My first county job was with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department. My assignment was to produce weekly overtime expenditure in charts, graphics, and figures for Mr. Tanaka and other executives. Most of reports were created under the direction of Mr. Tanaka, but things were changing every week due to budget crisis we faced each fiscal year. I had to produce figures and charts in moments of notice as always, but it was different with Mr. Tanaka. He was never demanding or unreasonable in what he wanted. Requests or orders were logical and I understood exactly why he wanted it to be done a particular way. When he demanded things to be done, they were always within reason and his goals were clear and consistent. He made me feel like part of a team like we are in this together and lets figure it out. Most of us working at headquarters generally do not matter to most of sworn executives. Mr. Tanaka being a number two man in LASD, he had never given that impression to me. His greetings were genuine and courteous from the first time I ran into him in the elevator and never forced. My impression of Mr. Tanaka is that he will overlook my mistake and give me another chance when he believes that I did put my best foot forward. paultanaka/best_foot_forward
