Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. Take from Edward Bernays, nephew of Sigmund Freud, first book: Propaganda. Some background: Bernays is the founding father of the Public Relations industry. The industry responsible for how governments and corporations communicate with and dispense information to the public. Bernays came straight out of the Creel commission, the infamous committee of public information which made Americas form of nationalism into consumerism by a fierce campaign of propaganda during WW1 - a model which many countries have adopted. Bernays went on to write Crystallizing public opinion which was an indispensable point of reference for Goebbels, Hitlers main propagandist. Bernays followed on from the consumer capitalist school of thought which brought us chain department stores, planned obsolescence and a focus on consumption of wants as opposed to needs, the three greatest destroyers of our collective virtues and all the great legacies of the most famous industrialists to come out of the industrial revolution such as J.P Morgan, Andrew Carnegie and John Rockefeller - Three families whose amassed wealth is the largest economy in the world: THESE are the people whom Bernays refers to in the above quote as an invisible government..
