Thanks to Paul Hindt for this incredible link: https://youtube/watch?v=H07pbDhBgXg Ever since the beginnings of my political consciousness, Ive always thought structurally. A lot of our basic problems are structural. Its easy to blame bad people, but its a lot harder to step back and look at the way our societies and institutions operate. So its easy to, say, judge Kanye for spending a ludicrous amount on a wedding or comparing himself to Nelson Mandela, but its a lot harder to say, Hold up, we live in a society that encourages ridiculous self-aggrandizement and, worse, offers that as one of the only routes for certain kinds of people to achieve the normative dream of that society. Is it really that surprising that some people would acquiesce to that endless psychic onslaught? I think Kleins approach here is very positive. As an anarchist, I am absolutely okay with breaking some rules. But Ive always loved Socrates wisdom, that there is an extreme hypocrisy in living in a society for years and then only when something is inconvenient deciding to complain. However, this is instead about just saying, Fine, theres a problem? Why dont I just fix it, in a non-coercive, personal way? I strongly suggest checking this speech out. I am not buying the whole Millennials will fix everything narrative that some have latched onto, but the research does seem to support that this is the kind of solution-seeking that millennials are going to be capable of doing.
