Thanks to Professor Irina Reyn, who invited NYC-based literary agent Andrea Somberg to campus Friday afternoon. Andrea gave students advice on a tiered approach, gave tips on writing query letters, and discussed how to build a long-term relationship with a literary agent. She also talked about how to get a job in publishing and all the changes occurring in the publishing industry. Its an interesting time in the industry, she said. There are huge numbers of conglomerations happening: Penguin and Random House, Harper Collins and Harlequin. Major publishing houses are combining to create super-publishers in order to scale for world markets. And also to fight companies like Amazon. At the same time, smaller publishing companies are doing well, and theres been a resurgence of independent retailers. I think there are more opportunities out there than there were 5-10 years ago. And, of course, thanks to Andrea Somberg for taking time out of her busy schedule to talk to our students. Were proud to be able to offer opportunities like this to our students, and well be sure to let you know details about the next event soon.
