Read on for more details about our environmental activity in 2014. ‘DOING A LITTLE IS DOING A LOT’: FRANKFORT’S ENVIRONMENT CLEANER AND GREENER Frankfort, Ind. – January 16, 2015 – Thanks to a dedicated partnership between environmentally-conscious Frankfort residents and hard working Street Department crews, 575 tons of recycled materials were collected in 2014, averaging 11 tons per week or 1,150,475 pounds of paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum, metal and plastic kept out of the Clinton County landfill. According to Street Superintendent George Belmore (aka Recycle Man), the 575 tons includes 106 tons dropped off at the Street Department throughout the year and 469 tons collected curbside. “Our caring residents proved the accuracy of our slogan, ‘doing a little is doing a lot’ with their efforts week in and week out making a significant, positive difference for our environment, resulting in Frankfort being cleaner and greener,” Belmore said. The City’s leaf collection program netted 91 truckloads of leaves (2,275 cubic yards) collected throughout the community. The City’s street sweeper collected 150 loads of debris or 840 cubic yards during 2014. While the holiday lights in TPA Park last Christmas were very popular, donations for the light project were down significantly from previous years, with $11,000 donated in 2014, compared to $16,000 contributed in 2013. Interim Parks Superintendent Belmore explained the light bill for last year’s holiday display totaled $4,000, with the Frankfort Parks Department team working to replace existing lights with more energy efficient LED bulbs whenever possible. “From the huge crowds we had through TPA Park during the holiday season, we are hopeful people will see the benefit in donating more next year in order for us to continue providing the beautiful light display that so many enjoyed, both from Frankfort and surrounding communities,” Belmore said.
