Thanks to all who came out to the Press Conference and the hearing today. Heres SAFEs response: Triangle v. Murray and O’Toole: SAFE’s Response Three weeks ago, under pressure from Triangle Properties, King County Sheriffs forcibly removed Jean and Byron Barton from their home of 61 years. Twice before, the Sheriff’s Department had refused to carry out the eviction on the grounds that it was immoral. Facing an eviction blockade organized by SAFE (Standing Against Foreclosure & Eviction), Sheriffs left Byron Barton, a severely disabled Vietnam Veteran, on the street. Mayor Murray stands in solidarity with the Bartons. He says that he recognizes that the Barton matter is a civil land dispute, which needs to be left to unwind in the courts. Indeed, it is still unclear who exactly owns the property. The matter is currently under appeal. Rather than support the Mayors decision, Triangle Properties chose to jump the gun, using up valuable county resources by bringing Mayor Murray and Seattle Police Chief Kathleen O’Toole to court today, August 8th. Prior to the court hearing, SAFE held a press conference that included speakers Jean Barton and 43rd District candidate Jess Spear. Unfortunately, the judge was not given anything approaching adequate information about the Bartons case; it was clear that Assistant City Attorney Patrick Downs had not conducted proper research about the Bartons case, and it was only in the last five minutes of the hearing that the Judge received the Mayors legal response. We at SAFE are still standing in solidarity with the courageous Barton Family and the Mayors decision to let the Bartons have their day in court. We are still asking the question, Who runs this town?—is it our elected representatives, or the corporate interests of developers?
